Despite Increase in Judges, SSDI Backlog Not Expected to Improve Until 2017

August 10, 2015

SSDI BACKLOGWhile there are plans to hire about 250 new administrative law judges this year, the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) hearing backlog is not anticipated to improve until 2017, according to the Social Security Administration. The backlog of claims consists of more than 1 million applicants waiting to have their day in court.

The backlog is causing SSDI applicants to wait on average more than a year to defend their rights to SSDI, with some close to two years. Fort Meyers, FL, Miami, FL and Brooklyn, NY are some of the offices with the highest processing times. During these lengthy waiting periods, some applicants are living without any source of income and constant uncertainty about the future.

The government needs to act to ensure that the SSA is living up to its promise of timely hearings for SSDI applicants. Contact your representative today and let them know how these delays are affecting millions of Americans’ lives every day.
