On October 22, 2014, the Social Security Administration announced a cost of living adjustment — a 1.7 percent increase — for Social Security benefits beginning January 2015. The average monthly payment for disabled workers will rise from $1,146 to $1,165. Approximately 64 million Americans will benefit from this increase, which was determined by the Consumer Price Index provided by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

What does this mean for Social Security disability recipients?

  • Your monthly payment will increase 1.7 percent beginning in January 2015.


What does this mean for Supplemental Security Income recipients?

  • Your monthly payment will increase beginning December 31, 2014.
