Beware False Social Security Phone Calls Phishing for Sensitive Information

March 30, 2016

Fraud Alert

A new rash of scam phone calls about Social Security disability benefits has broken out, warns Social Security Inspector General Patrick P. O’Carroll in a recent press release. These criminal callers “phish” or probe for sensitive information like Social Security numbers and bank account numbers, and try to use it for identity or monetary theft.

How do I protect myself?

  • Disability Justice representatives will always introduce themselves by name and organization – make sure the caller states they are with “Disability Justice.” We will never say we are calling from the Social Security Administration, as we are a disability benefits advocacy group.
  • If you have any question or concern that the person you are speaking with is not legitimate, do not disclose confidential information over the phone. It is important to us that you feel safe and secure in information transactions, and our organization can always accept sensitive information via secure e-mail or snail mail.

If you have questions about any communication you receive claiming to be the Social Security Administration, you can always contact your local Social Security office or call Social Security’s customer service number at 1-800-772-1213, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday to verify its legitimacy. You can also report suspicious activity to the Social Security Fraud Hotline at, or by phone at 1-800-269-0271, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Eastern Standard Time, Monday through Friday.
