The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced a new partnership with the Social Security Administration (SSA) to help expedite disability decisions for veterans through a new joint health information technology initiative.
The technology enables the VA and SSA to securely share information electronically, meaning Veterans and their dependents will receive disability benefit decisions faster. The plan also offers safer handling of sensitive information for the nearly 15 million medical records that the SSA reviews annually when making disability determinations. Additionally, the automated streamlining of information sharing means both organizations will save money.
“VA’s partnership with Social Security will ultimately improve the quality of life for Veterans and their dependents by enabling Veterans to share their health information within a safe and secure health-related consumer application,” said Dr. David Shulkin, VA’s Under Secretary for Health.
