On October 14, 2016, Attorneys Brynn Lapszynski and Connor Deverell from Disability Justice’s New York office attended the 2nd Annual Maria Concillo Memorial Scholarship fundraiser held by the New York District Council of Carpenters, Local Union 926. The casino-themed event took place at the El Caribe Country Club in Brooklyn, New York.
Proceeds from the event are used to fund scholarships for union members’ children to help with college costs. Three $5,000-per-year scholarships for students planning to attend 2- or 4-year colleges have already been awarded as a result of last year’s inaugural fundraiser.
New York State Senator Martin J. Golden, a major advocate for childhood education, was also in attendance. He delivered a stirring speech about the importance of education, contextualizing the importance of such fundraisers.
“We’re always proud to support union members and their families,” said Brynn. Connor added, “It was a fun evening for a very worthy cause.”
