“No longer will older Americans be denied the healing miracle of modern medicine. No longer will illness crush and destroy the savings that they have so carefully put away over a lifetime so that they might enjoy dignity in their later years.”
President Lyndon B. Johnson, July 30, 1965
Today marks 50 years since President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare into law. This federal health insurance plan provides more than 55 million Americans with access to quality healthcare and is a critical aspect for all Social Security disability beneficiaries.
When someone is approved for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), he or she will receive health insurance coverage under Medicare 24 months after his or her date of disability. Medicare ensures that disabled individuals at any age will be able to care for their medical needs at a reasonable cost. Disabled Americans do not have to struggle to pay for their medical costs or wait until retirement to receive Medicare.
At Disability Justice, we celebrate this anniversary as we continue to defend our clients’ rights to benefits and health insurance.
